Picture: Pregnant WomanPregnancy, the period prior to it and afterwards, provides opportunities to help pregnant smokers stop smoking.  Not only are many women smokers motivated to stop smoking at this time, they experience higher levels of family support to stop smoking and have greater contact with the healthcare system.

Smoking in pregnancy prevalence for North Yorkshire is 17.8%.  This is above the England (national) prevalence of 16.6%.

  • Women who smoke are less likely to carry their babies to full term and there is a 26% increased risk that they will miscarry or experience a still birth. Babies of smoking mothers on average weigh 200g lighter at birth.

  • Infants of parents who smoke are more likely to be admitted to hospital for bronchitis and pneumonia in the first year of life.

  • Estimates have placed the costs of a complicated delivery by a smoker at 66% higher than that of a non-smoker.

  • Smoking accounts for one half the difference in life expectancy between social classes 1 and 5.  Thus, the burden of smoking falls most heavily on the least advantaged in our region.

  • The routine and manual group is the only group where prevalence of smoking in pregnancy has increased over the last 5 years.

  • In North Yorkshire the teenage conception rate is 27.1, in the City of York this is 42.2 (2005 ONS data).  Younger mothers are more likely to smoke before or during pregnancy than older mothers and are also more likely to continue to smoke throughout pregnancy.  68% of mothers aged 20 or under reported smoking before or during pregnancy and 45% continued to smoke.

Stopping smoking during pregnancy is the single most important step a mother can take to benefit her health and her baby’s health.

North Yorkshire Stop Smoking Service NHS provides one-to-one or group sessions with trained stop smoking advisors.  We also have pregnancy stop smoking specialists who can offer advice about dealing with stress, weight gain and the nicotine replacement therapy available to help manage cravings.
