Staying HealthySelf CareLocal Initiatives Met Office Health Forecasting Scheme Patients in York with COPD are to be offered the opportunity of being recruited to a new weather forecasting pilot, run by the Met Office. It has been recognised that changes in the weather and presence of infections in the atmosphere can have an adverse effect on patients with COPD. The scheme uses this information to identify when this group of patients are most at risk of becoming ill and alerts them so they can take preventative action to reduce the risk. Patients who agree to be included in the pilot will receive an automated message from the Met Office when there is an increased risk. They will be asked to confirm they are the patient in the household with COPD, whether they are experiencing worsening symptoms and if they have sufficient medication for the next 2 weeks. Each patient will receive a 'Guide to health forecasting for COPD' which provides information about the scheme and advice on how to protect themselves from illness over the winter period.
