Healthy Schools

The National Healthy Schools Programme has four themes, one of which is healthy eating.  This includes a number of criteria that schools need to fulfil in order to achieve National Healthy School Status.

Healthy Start

www.healthystart.nhs.uk

Healthy Start replaces the Welfare Food Scheme. It is now live throughout Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The new scheme:

  • includes fresh fruit and vegetables as well as milk and infant formula milk

  • supports breastfeeding

  • encourages earlier and closer contact between health professionals and families from disadvantaged groups

  • includes free vitamin supplements for children from 6 months until their 4th birthday. Free vitamin supplements for women should be available from Spring 2007

On the Healthy Start site you will find information about the scheme, who qualifies and what is received, there are publications to support the scheme.
