Change4Life is a society-wide movement that aims to prevent people from becoming overweight by encouraging them to eat better and move more

Change4Life is a new initiative, supported by the Department of Health, bringing together health and education professionals, industry and the third sector with the shared aims to improve children’s diets and levels of activity so reducing the threat to their future health and happiness.  The goal of the initiative is to help every family in England eat well, move more and live longer.

Change4Life aims to inspire a society-wide movement that encourages everyone to make changes to their diet and activity levels. The focus being on long term prevention, so the initial stages will be targeting families with young children – aged 0-11.

Healthy Weight, Active Lives Strategy

This campaign will be one of the ways in which NHS North Yorkshire and York will achieve the ambitious goals set out in its comprehensive Healthy Weight, Active Lives Strategy.

Campaign Messages

The main messages of the campaign are ‘Eat well, move more, live longer’ and focus on the healthy eating and physical activity messages.

Further information is available on our website on Healthy Weight, Increasing Physical Activity and Eating a Healthy Diet.

How can practitioners get involved?

‘If we carry on as we are, 90% of today’s children could be overweight or obese by 2050.  Changes have to be made now if we are to stem the rising tide of obesity.’ (Help stop childhood obesity, Change4Life, NHS)

If you work with children and young people and families there are many ways in which you can get involved with this national campaign.  These are:

  • Register as part of the organisation using the simple 3 point process detailed below.

  • Once you have done this you will be eligible to use the 'assets', (these include use of the Change4Life logo, and free leaflets, posters and stickers which have been produced to support the campaign).  The aim is to align healthy activities to the Change4Life programme; this could include using the logos on printed literature, use of the posters etc to advertise your breastfeeding cafes, toddler activity groups, cooking classes or walking groups.  By using the same logo and resources the public will be more aware of the message and will relate your activities to those which will help them, and their families, lead a healthier life.

  • To share good practice and seek out new ideas please let us know of any activities you are planning or currently run so that we can add them to a Chang4Life webpage under the Staying Healthy part of the NHS North Yorkshire and York website.  To see what other information is available, click here

  • Send your ideas and initiatives for inclusion on the website to Jacqui Fox, change4life@nyypct.nhs.uk.
