'You're Welcome' - making health services young people friendly

You're Welcome - making NHS services young people friendlyIn May 2011 the Department of Health published an updated on-line toolkit for services working towards this quality mark – see information below.

'You're Welcome' is underpinned by the ethos that all young people are entitled to receive appropriate health care wherever they access it. The Department of Health ‘Quality criteria for young people friendly health services’ sets out principles that will help health services – both in the community and in hospitals – to become young people friendly.

'You're Welcome' supports commissioners and service providers to achieve this. There is a two tier approach:

  1. Services can undertake the Self Review Toolkit benchmarking themselves against the principles of You’re Welcome

  2. Services can undertake the Self Review Toolkit submitting it along with a portfolio of supporting evidence for verification and a service visit. Successful verification would lead to your service being awarded You’re Welcome Accreditation

Case Studies

Case Study - Family planning service in York

In October 2010, staff providing contraceptive and sexual health services at Monkgate Health Centre, York, celebrated receiving the coveted You’re Welcome award.

Family planning service in YorkThey were the first service in North Yorkshire and York to receive the award and it is indicative of the hard work the team puts into ensuring their services are young people-friendly.

To achieve the You’re Welcome award, the centre’s Family Planning Service and Genitourinary Medicine (GUM) service were assessed against a number of quality criteria ranging from ease of access to the involvement of young people in the planning and evaluation of services. The assessment praised the services for their excellent steps towards becoming young people friendly and clearly valuing the role of young people in developing the service.

Case Study - Haxby Group’s web site well received

Haxby Group Practice worked with young people to create a web site specifically for young people which has been well received.

Dr Mike Holmes, Partner at Haxby Group Practice, said: “We have really worked hard as a practice team to raise the profile of health issues relating to young people.

“Our young people's forum has become part of the practice - they have created their own website and have helped us design and target health related information specifically for the young people in our area.

“Working towards You're Welcome accreditation has been a rewarding process and has helped us improve the standard of primary care services we offer to young people and we hope that we will see improved long term health outcomes as a result.”
